Tattoo shop has designs on a grand re-opening after inferno

A MAN had his business destroyed after a four way plug caught fire underneath a desk.

But already Louis Goodwin, who runs the Skingraff tattoo studio in New Bradwell, said he is looking to raise the money needed to redecorate after the fire on Sunday evening.

Louis said: “We were all sat in the flat above the studio when we saw smoke coming through the door. We hunted around looking for the source thinking it may have been the dinner that was cooking.

“Then we went downstairs, opened the door and it looked like an inferno. Everywhere was gutted and it was a horrible sight.”

The fire was started by a faulty four way plug that was left under a desk. Firefighters told Louis that it may have been sparking and spluttering for a while, dried out the wood and then caught fire.

The fire only happened on Sunday afternoon and already Louis and his team have been inundated with offers of help from a number of people.

He said: “We already have three or four tipper vans and other various things to help so in the New Year we will be getting back on our feet. I would like to say a big thank you to everyone who has been in touch – it has made me feel 100 per cent better about it all.”

Tattoos make support for breast cancer fight permanent

A West Knoxville business is using a lot of pink ink for Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

"I was just browsing the Internet one day and the idea popped in my head," said Sarah Hurst, owner of Vivid Tattoo on Sutherland Avenue.

Vivid Tattoo has tattooed four breast cancer awareness ribbons a day free of charge this October.

45 ribbon tattoos have been completed. The tattoo shop hopes to mark 50 clients with the symbol before the end of the month.

Kathie Salyers of Knoxville stopped by to get the tattoo in memory of her mother's first cousin who was like a mom to Salyers.

"I think it broadens the awareness because the tattoo community isn't typically included in other things [breast cancer awareness events]. I think it's great what they're doing," Salyers added.

Vivid Tattoo said appointments must be made to recieve the pink ribbon tattoo.

Donations go to the Wellness Community of East Tennessee.

ASHEVILLE — Jane Roane had been thinking of getting a tattoo for years. But she didn't know what design. Or where to engrave the ink. Last weekend, it all became clear when she got her first tattoo during a breast cancer research fundraiser at Freaks-n-Geeks.

Now Roane, a petite, 38-year-old Asheville runner, proudly sports her new ink: a pink ribbon incorporated into a stone fish Christian symbol on the underside of her right forearm.

“It's my source of strength,” she said, “my faith and beating breast cancer. Now I can see it every time I run.”

At the same time, the name “Jane Roane” is a source of strength and inspiration to most Asheville runners.

“Everybody in the running community knows Jane,” said her friend Julie Corey, 43. “It was so scary when we heard she had breast cancer. She's so young and strong and healthy.”
No typical signs

Roane, a lifelong runner, a private running coach and a manager at Jus' Running for the past decade, said she was taking a shower in late January when she felt a lump in her breast.

“I wasn't a regular self-exam checker, but I'm aware of my body because I'm a runner,” Roane said. “It was Stage 1. It was an invasive cancer.”

Earlier that month Roane had raced in the 25K (15.5-mile) division of the Tsali Frosty Foot Fest — a trail run to raise money for the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation. She had just had her first mammogram the previous October, which showed no abnormalities. She was young and had no family history of the disease.

“It was just totally bad luck,” said Sesalie Smathers, 39, a radiation oncologist and a longtime friend of Roane's. Smathers was not Roane's doctor, but offered her advice and emotional support as a friend. “But she had an early stage breast cancer. I was very optimistic for her.”

Roane underwent surgery in February. During the lumpectomy, Roane said, her doctors found more invasive cells. They advised Roane that she needed a mastectomy.

“I was the fittest I've ever been,” Roane said. “I was getting ready to compete at the Myrtle Beach Half Marathon in February. Instead, I had surgery on that day.”

In March, Roan started an 18-week treatment of chemotherapy, as well as the drug herceptin.

The first things Roane thought about after diagnosis were her 5-year-old son, Spencer, and her husband, Matt.

“I thought, I need to take care of my son. I need to be here for him to grow up,” Roane said. “My husband knew from Day 1 it would be fine. He said, ‘You're the toughest person I know.'”

True to his words, and her inner will, Roane continued to run, even through the exhausting chemo treatments. She cut back from 70 miles a week to about 20 during the darkest days, but is back up to 50, and ready for her first big race since January, the Power of Pink Relay this Saturday.

Women running for women

Corey decided to form a team in Roane's honor for the Power of Pink Relay, a 20-mile race just for women, hosted by Haywood Regional Medical Center to raise money for mammograms for women who can't afford them.

She sent out a call for teammates — the relay consists of teams of five women who each run a 4-mile leg — and got so many responses, she had to turn women away. Smathers was one of the first to sign up for the team, as well as elite Asheville runners Rachel Paar and Jennings Garry. Smathers was so enthusiastic about the idea of honoring Roane, she and her practice, Mountain Radiation Oncology, decided to sponsor the team.

“Most women I see (at MRO) have early stage breast cancer, and that's because of mammograms. With the economy and so many people losing their jobs, a lot of women might be putting off mammograms a year or two. Mammograms are what save lives.”

Roane said she didn't think she was fast enough to run on Team MRO, but the others convinced her it wasn't about winning, it was about the joy of running.

Roane will be the team's lead-off runner.

Power of Pink race director Greg Duff said there are already 28 teams signed up for the third annual race, which also has a 4-mile race open to men and women.

“My prognosis is pretty good,” said Roane, who plans to dye her newly growing hair pink for Saturday's race. “With aggressive treatment, we're looking at preventing recurrence. The future is unknown, but I'll deal with what comes.”

Peter Criss of KISS announced that he underwent a mastectomy back March 2008 after being diagnosed with breast cancer. While this terrible thing happened to one of America's best-loved drummers, some good did come out of it. It raised the awareness of breast cancer in men.

Cancer is one of the biggest a**holes to humankind. One way to combat disease is through research and research costs money. Atomic Tattoos has announced a fundraising event called "Tats for Tatas" to benefit their local breast cancer research.

Tattooing Someone's Name

This is one of the biggest and most common mistakes. It has nothing to do with an artist's lack of tattooing skill. It has everything to do with your own present personal preoccupation. It may feel like someone will always be special to you and truly deserves to have his name or face tattooed on you.

Family Members - This may be a good idea if you are considering the name or face of your child or parents. After all, you can never change your parents and offspring. It is a different story though if you are thinking of a significant other. No matter how in love you are right now, you may not last forever. You do not want an ex's name on you forever especially when you find someone new.

Not Researching About a Design

It is a mistake is not to know the exact meaning of a design. Just because a design looks feminine and delicate doesn't mean that it is meaningful. Of course, not everyone picks a tattoo design for its significance. Others pick designs based on the coolness or cuteness of appearance. This is all well and good but you don't want to be stuck with a tattoo for a girl that has a negative or unintentionally humorous meaning. This is especially true with designs like angels, flowers, foreign characters and stars that may have various definitions depending on the particular style.

Being Only Half-Convinced
